I met Hicham a few weeks ago per coincidence (but then again, we all know that there is no such thing as coincidence). I was sitting on my scooter in the city centre in Geneva/Switzerland and was talking to my sister on the phone and noticed the touristic train stopping right behind me and the driver getting off, also speaking on the phone. We both finished talking on our phones at the same time, our eyes crossed and we smiled at each other.
We started a conversation, but not one of those superficial ones you tend to have with most people you meet for the first time. It wasn’t like “Hi, what do you do, where do you work, who do you know” kind of conversation you tend to have so often, especially here in Geneva.
Hicham asked me whether I wanted to come on a tour with him. I didn’t have time but enough time for a little chat before he had to leave on his next tour. He told me how proud he was to be working as a tourist driver during the day and as a chef and personal driver in the evenings. I immediately warmed up towards him and told him about my passion for healing, Reiki and the other energy therapies I do. His eyes lit up as he also believes in energy healing work. He shared with me that he felt so grateful for everything he has in his life, that he feels guided and I admitted to be feeling the same, that I always feel guided. He gave me a title to an excellent book he had read and I noted it down to order it on amazon.
That was our first encounter. The second encounter a few weeks later was just a very short one. Again a “coincidence” as I had again parked where his little tourist train stopped and came back to my scooter at the exact time he had a 5 minute break. When he saw me his entire face lit up again and he said “C’est incroyable” – this is unbelievable, I was just thinking about you 10 minutes ago. We shook hands and then he already had to leave again.
The third encounter was today. Again per chance I came back to my scooter exactly at the time where he had a little break. I sat down inside his little tourist train and we had the chance to talk a bit longer. He was in a particularly good mood and showed me a certificate he had gotten for passing a special test to be able to drive an ambulance. He told me in the winter months it was hard for him, as there were less tourists and therefore he worked 3 days less, and that also the restaurant where he had worked in the evenings has to let him go now in the winter months. But there was not one little second of bitterness or sadness. On the contrary, again he told me how lucky he is, that he is being guided all the time. And so he told me the story of how he had found his new ambulance driver job:
“I started looking for jobs everywhere and first made my way to La Praille in Carouge, to see whether any of the stores or Cafes needed someone over the winter. No one did. I walked down a street and saw another restaurant, but again no luck. When I came out again I saw an ambulance at the bottom of the street and my intuition told me to go and talk to the driver there.
Hicham: “Hello Sir, I see you drive this ambulance. I’m looking for a job and something told me, why not drive an ambulance?”
Ambulance Driver: “I started just like you. With no clue how to become an ambulance driver. But actually you need to pass a few tests. I can give you all the details about these tests and also give you my employer’s details. As far as I know we always need drivers.”
Hicham: “Thank you, Sir, this is amazing. Thanks so much for your help.”
Hicham was smiling all over his face when he told me. I could feel and see how happy he was, that by sheer “coincidence” he was being guided towards that ambulance. He continued:
Hicham: “You know, isn’t it amazing, that by looking for a job at “Point A” which didnt work out, brought me to “Point B”, which also didn’t work out, but that’s when I saw the ambulance at “Point C”. I was guided all along, and I’m so grateful for that. All the time when I ask for help Im being guided. I always have what I need in my life. Isn’t that just so wonderful?”
Then, he took out his certificate to prove that he had passed all tests and could now work as an ambulance driver. He even took out his phone and showed me the emails from his new employer stating his starting date.
Hicham: “you know, I believe I’m being guided by someone from my family”
As I had always felt the presence of his grandmother around him I told him so and again, his face lit up completely and with tears in his eyes he said: “she was so dear to me, I still remember her even though she died when I was 4 or 5 years old. I’m sure she is with me because i take such good care of my mother - her daughter.”
He then paused and thought for a while and asked me: “I’m sure we didn’t meet by coincidence. I’m sure there must be some meaning to it. What do you think it is?
“Well”, I replied. “I’m also more than sure that nothing happens by coincidence. I sense that you have an amazing aura, an amazing positive energy around you. I believe you could be a great healer.” And indeed, I had thought this from the very 1st day I had met him. As a Reiki teacher I have a very good feeling about the sort of people who have a lotof light aroud them.
He was all smiling again and said: “That makes total sense. Now that I’m an ambulance driver, to develop some healing skills. But unfortunately I don’t have any financial means to attend such courses at the moment. You know I work 3 days less now...”
I assured him that whenever he had the time to attend one of my Reiki courses I would let him attend it for free. I felt he had given me so much. Here is what I gained or learned by spending a little bit of time with him:
1) We keep meeting people in the strangest ways. We need to keep open minded and keep our hearts open. The waiter, the postman, the truck driver, the cleaning lady, the farmer, all these people might have an amazing story to tell or such an important lesson to teach. If we keep segregating ourselves from people who we believe don’t have our same education, the same upbringing, same values and that any time spent with them is a waste of time, then we really have a long way to go in this life to understand that we are not separated or different from anyone in this world.
2) We read tons of books by who we think are “enlightened” people. We spend Thousands of dollars flying around the globe or to places such as India to meet a guru in an ashram who we believe can teach us so many lessons. But really, you can learn so much just by opening your eyes and your heart wherever you are right now. By talking to the simplest of people on the street and understanding their stories. By talking to a complete stranger. Sometimes these people understand far better how this world and the universe works than any other professor at Harward or a top scientist at Cern. Sometimes it’s these people who are so much more enlightened than those who have read hundreds of spiritual books about enlightenment. Sometimes it’s these people who are the most grateful ones even though they have so little wealth in their life. They have understood that real wealth has nothing to do with material possesions but that real wealth we only accumulate by what we give away, for what we give to people we always get it returned a tenfold.
This is for what I’m so very much grateful this year: for the beauty of these magical encounters. I’m grateful for all the “Hichams” in this world who come into our lives and warm up our hearts. I’m thankful that I’m always again reminded of what is really important in this life/in my life. I’m eternally grateful to be experiencing so much compassion and love for someone I just met and someone who inspired me so much that I now write an entire blog entry about this man. I’m grateful that I can feel this magic right now and for the tears of joy and gratefulness that keep running down my cheeks when I feel touched at the deepest level of my soul.
So, go out there everyone, smile at strangers, keep your hearts opened, keep open minded, try and look for the beauty of each encounter and most of all: keep being grateful. Every day that you don’t have a profound feeling of gratefulness is an entire day wasted! Keep the magic alive in your lives and extend your kindness to people you don’t even know. You will be surprised what it does to you.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
